Sport is a very important and integral part of the life of the school. This is illustrated by the scope and range of the school’s sporting related activities - and some of our recent sporting successes:
We are affiliated with the Derbyshire Sports Partnership.
As part of the Partnership, we participate and compete in many different sporting activities every year – football, hockey, basketball, table tennis, cricket, cross country and athletics.
We also have a link with Derby County Football Club to compete at football. The Derby County Link means that we have registered the school’s interest with the Derby County Community Trust and they, in turn, inform us of/invite us to any appropriate events or competitions.
Also, ‘Rammy’ makes visits to the school and we get the opportunity for families to receive free or reduced price tickets to Derby County matches.
We participate in many inter-school sporting competitions as part of the Anthony Gell Cluster of Primary Schools. A particular benefit of these activities is that they very much help with the transition to secondary school.
We participate in the Sainsbury’s School Games legacy programme, linked to the 2012 Olympics. As such, we work towards an annual ‘whole school award’, related to the competitions entered, school sport opportunities, sports club links and inclusive sport for all i.e. sport offering opportunities for all children, regardless of age, gender, ability or Special Educational Needs. In 2013/14, we achieved the Bronze Award and in 2014/15, Silver.
As part of the Sainsbury’s School Games award, we have a school’s Sports Crew and Sports Leaders that meet to help make decisions and organise sport related events. The ‘Sports Crew’ comprises Junior children voted for by all the children. ‘Sports Leaders’ are made up of Year 6 children who wish to lead sporting activities for younger children.
We enter a water polo league at the the Arc Leisure Centre in Matlock. We were the only school to enter two teams last year (with over 90% of all Year 5s and 6s participating). Our Year 5 team finished 5th, with the Year 6 team being undefeated throughout their eight matches and winning the league!
South Peak Sports is an annual event run in the summer term at Darley Dale School where our Juniors compete against small schools in a variety of running events. We have won this event in both 2014 and 2015!
Other sporting achievements in the last year included being winners of both the Anthony Gell Cluster Sports Hall Athletics and the Anthony Gell Quadkids (Athletics) Cluster.
In addition, Vicki Holmes holds a running club every Wednesday morning and ‘morning wake-up clubs’ every Thursday and Friday mornings.
